Statement from Assemblymember Berman on Recent Supreme Court Decision on Mail-in Voting

SACRAMENTO, CA - Assemblymember Marc Berman (D-Menlo Park) has released the following statement on the recent Supreme Court decision on President Trump's Executive Order to limit mail-in voting:

"Today's Supreme Court decision injects confusion and uncertainty into our elections barely a month before 23 million California voters are scheduled to receive a ballot in their mailbox," said Assemblymember Berman. "Voters shouldn't have to wonder whether President Trump can dictate who gets to vote by mail. That decision belongs to the states, as it always has. California will keep every eligible voter's mail ballot secure and accessible, and we'll be back in court immediately if Trump tries to overreach into state election administration."

"As the cost of both the war in Iran and basic necessities in America skyrocket, Trump's approval has cratered to historical lows. Faced with the potential for massive and embarrassing losses in the midterms, Trump is now trying to erect as many unnecessary barriers as possible to voting, with the goal of disenfranchising millions of Americans who are tired of his incompetence, corruption, and cruelty. This is an attack on our democracy, plain and simple."

Assemblymember Berman chaired the Assembly Elections Committee from 2017 to 2021, where he was a leader on protecting voting rights and making voting more accessible to all. In 2020, in response to the COVID pandemic, Assemblymember Berman authored AB 860 to ensure every active registered voter in California received a ballot in the mail for the 2020 Presidential election. After this wildly successful effort, during which California had the highest voter turnout since 1952, Assemblymember Berman authored AB 37 in 2021 to make California a permanent universal vote-by-mail state.
