FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. - Boingo Wireless, in collaboration with the Army & Air Force Exchange Service and Fort Meade leadership, marked a major step forward in connectivity with the stacking of a new cellular tower here at one of the nation's mission-critical military installations on Wednesday, April 1.
The milestone event brought together Deputy Garrison Commander Brian Foley, AAFES Vice President of Services Operations Carla McDowell and Boingo CEO Mike Finley, underscoring the coordination required to deliver reliable wireless infrastructure at scale.
"Another phenomenal effort to increase throughput capacity for the devices and networks that we all have come to rely on in our daily lives," said Foley.
The tower - with antennas from different providers - will improve the lives of the 64,000 people who work here daily, Foley said, as well as the 12,000 who call the installation home.
This is the third Boingo deployment on the installation and is designed to support AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, expanding multi-carrier coverage across the post.
The new infrastructure strengthens the wireless foundation that supports daily coordination, real-time decision-making and the needs of tens of thousands of personnel in routine wireless communication daily.
The project reflects a commitment between Boingo, AAFES and Fort Meade to invest in infrastructure that keeps pace with community needs. Delivering consistent coverage across a base of this scale requires long-term planning, close coordination and a deployment model that can support multiple carriers simultaneously.
Foley praised the cooperative effort of Boingo, AAFES and Fort Meade for the "wonderful effort to support this community - our community - in increasing services."
"The completion of the Fort Meade Brownell Tower project marks a significant upgrade to Fort Meade's cellular network. This enhancement will improve the quality of life for service members and their families by delivering stronger, more reliable connectivity across the installation, while supporting our continued mission to serve the best customers in the world. AAFES Telecom, in partnership with our contracted provider, Boingo Wireless, has a long-standing track record of delivering reliable cellular infrastructure to military communities worldwide," added McDowell.
For Boingo, this is part of a broader effort to help modernize connectivity across U.S. military installations worldwide. The company designs, builds and manages wireless networks at more than 100 bases, specializing in Wi-Fi, cellular and fiber connectivity.
"The towers built at Fort Meade are part of Boingo's ongoing commitment to expanding and strengthening cellular coverage across U.S. military bases. Whether someone is supporting a mission, coordinating with their team or calling home at the end of the day, that connection matters and it needs to be dependable," Finley said.
The tower stacking also highlighted the workforce behind the deployment, including three Veterans who were part of the crew completing the installation, bringing technical expertise and firsthand military experience to the project.
"At Boingo, we're proud to have veterans working on our team. People who have worked and lived on these bases," Finley said. "Today we have two Army veterans and one Air Force veteran on the tower stacking crew, and we thank them for their service and the expertise they bring to each project."
As Fort Meade continues to evolve, expanded multi-carrier infrastructure will play a central role in supporting our warfighters and everyday connectivity across the installation.
