WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement following the announcement by President Trump that he intends to meet with President Vladimir Putin in Hungary:
"After walking away from his Alaska summit with Putin empty handed, President Trump has now decided to reward Putin again by rolling out the red carpet in Hungary. President Trump is repeating the mistakes of the past by not arming Ukraine to the teeth and letting them win this war. Now he's taking it a step further by rewarding Putin while Ukraine gets nothing. President Trump continues to get strung along by Putin.
"It's high time that Putin pay a price for his actions in Ukraine. I am encouraged that Majority Leader Thune indicated his intent to move the Graham-Blumenthal Russia sanctions bill to a vote. I look forward to seeing the final text of this legislation. If President Trump continues to drag his feet, Congress must act decisively to hold Putin accountable and end this war."
