WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) released the following statement on the horrific shooting that occurred at the Islamic Center of San Diego:
"Angela and I are horrified by the attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Houses of worship and schools should always be places of peace, safety, and community.
"This violence is especially painful as Muslims gather to observe Dhul-Hijjah, one of the holiest periods in Islam, and celebrate Eid al-Adha next week. Every person, regardless of their faith, deserves to worship freely and safely without fear of hate, intimidation, or violence.
"I'm grateful to the law enforcement officers and first responders who acted quickly to protect lives - and especially Amin Abdullah, the security guard and father of eight who gave everything to protect his community. My heart is with the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Muslim community in San Diego and across California. We must remain united against hate in all its forms and reject those who spread Islamophobia and white supremacy of any type."
