Ball State IDIA Lab Launches Mesa Verde Virtual Companion App for Apple and Android Devices

Ball State University's Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts (IDIA Lab) has launched the Mesa Verde Virtual Companion, a new augmented reality mobile app designed to deepen public engagement with Mesa Verde National Park through immersive, interactive digital experiences.

Now available for free download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, the Mesa Verde Virtual Companion brings the cultural landscape of Mesa Verde to life through augmented reality, 3D visualization, narrated interpretation, animated figures, and interactive learning content.

Created to complement both on-site and off-site exploration, the app allows users to explore detailed 3D reconstructions of ancestral structures, view animated interpretive scenes, and engage with educational content that contextualizes the lives, technologies, and cultural practices of the Ancestral Pueblo people, who made the Mesa Verde region their home for more than 700 years, from approximately 600 to 1300 CE.

Located in southwestern Colorado, near the Four Corners region, Mesa Verde National Park protects nearly 5,000 known archaeological sites, including more than 600 cliff dwellings, and is recognized as both a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Mesa Verde Virtual Companion is designed to help expand access to the park's stories while supporting stewardship by providing digital access to remote, fragile, or difficult-to-reach features of the park.

"Mesa Verde Virtual Companion reflects the type of projects IDIA Lab is committed to developing-using immersive media, interactivity, and new technologies to make cultural heritage stories more accessible, engaging, and meaningful," said John Fillwalk, senior director of the IDIA Lab. "This app gives visitors, students, educators, ancestral communities, and those who may never be able to travel to Mesa Verde a new way to experience and learn from one of North America's most significant archaeological landscapes."

The app includes features designed for a wide range of audiences, including park visitors preparing for or reflecting on a trip, educators incorporating cultural heritage into classroom learning, families exploring history together, and users who want to experience Mesa Verde remotely. The project, created with guidance from tribal experts at the Acoma Pueblo community, includes a welcome tutorial for new users, an accessibility voiceover option for learning content, and an extensive graphical user interface.

Designed with accessibility and ease of use in mind, the Mesa Verde Virtual Companion offers intuitive navigation and visually rich experiences optimized for mobile devices. Its augmented reality features layer digital content onto real-world environments, creating a sense of presence and connection to place while encouraging exploration, historical understanding, and respect for cultural heritage.

The project is part of IDIA Lab's broader body of work employing immersive technologies to support public education, preservation, and inclusive access to cultural resources. Through scholarly research, interpretive narratives, and advanced digital media, the app offers a contemporary approach to experiencing one of Indigenous America's most significant archaeological landscapes.

Established at Ball State to bridge emerging digital technologies and immersive learning, the IDIA Lab-part of Ball State's Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning-develops scholarly, creative, and pedagogical projects that explore virtual and augmented reality, human-computer interface design, visualization, and 3D simulation.

Initially supported through Lilly Endowment, Inc.'s Digital Media Initiative, the IDIA Lab provides facilities and services that give students and faculty space to prototype, test, and refine immersive experiences, supporting classroom projects, faculty research, and partner-driven work. IDIA Lab collaborations extend beyond campus, connecting Ball State expertise with organizations seeking interactive, experiential approaches to learning and engagement.
