(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Ned Lamont and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Emma Cimino are applauding today's announcement that the Revolution Wind offshore wind project has reached its commercial operation date, marking the project's official completion of construction and the start of it generating commercial power under a power purchase agreement.
"This project being fully operational is a significant milestone for Connecticut and a welcome addition to our energy mix," Governor Lamont said. "Revolution Wind will help to lower utility costs for families and businesses, improve the reliability of our grid, and provide clean electricity that will power 350,000 homes. I offer my congratulations to the project's developer and the many skilled Connecticut workers who worked hard to complete this project. This moment was a long time coming, and this project weathered multiple storms in the form of challenges from the federal administration. I commend everyone involved for staying the course and keeping focused on the goal-to get this project completed and online, delivering affordable, reliable, and clean power to our grid to benefit our residents."
"Revolution Wind will save ratepayers in Connecticut and New England hundreds of millions of dollars a year on their electricity bills," Acting Commissioner Cimino said. "This new, reliable source of emission-free power, insulated from geopolitical events that can cause dramatic price fluctuations, is hugely beneficial to our grid and our ratepayers, particularly as we head into the cold winter months. In addition to the significant savings and reliability benefits, the 304 megawatts of carbon free power will help move Connecticut closer to our emission reduction goals. Congratulations to everyone involved in envisioning and constructing this project, which Connecticut selected for power purchase agreements through competitive procurements in 2018 and 2019."
Revolution Wind is a 704 megawatt (MW) offshore wind project approximately 15 nautical miles southeast of Point Judith, Rhode Island. The project began construction in 2023. Now fully operational, Revolution Wind will deliver enough electricity to the New England grid to power 350,000 homes, equivalent to about 2.5% of the region's electricity supply. Connecticut will purchase 304 MW of the final output from Revolution Wind with the remaining 400 MW to be delivered to Rhode Island. Connecticut's share will meet about 5% of the state's overall electricity demand.
