Montgomery Launches Major Zoning Ordinance Overhaul to Reflect Modern Growth

Montgomery, AL - For the first time in decades, Montgomery is rewriting the rules that shape its future. The city has begun a comprehensive update to its zoning ordinance, a framework that influences everything from where homes are built to how businesses expand and neighborhoods thrive.

The current ordinance, adopted over 60 years ago and last updated in 1985, no longer meets the needs of a growing, modern city. This update will align land-use policies with health, safety, prosperity, and Montgomery's unique character.

"The city is updating its zoning ordinance, a critical tool that determines how land is used, where homes are built, and how businesses grow," said Shaleta Jones, Land Use Control Specialist.

Why Zoning Matters

  • Protects homes and neighborhoods: Ensures quality of life for residents.
  • Promotes smart growth: Builds safe, vibrant communities.
  • Balances development with environmental stewardship: Safeguards natural resources while encouraging progress.

Community Vision at the Center

The update is designed to preserve Montgomery's history and identity while planning for future growth. Citizens are invited to share ideas on maintaining architectural character, protecting historic sites, and enhancing natural resources.

Your Voice Matters

Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming public meetings and help shape the city's future. Public input will guide strategies for safeguarding Montgomery's environmental assets and ensuring development reflects community values.
