Italian Journal Focus on Censorship and Freedom to Publish

In the opening editorial to the latest volume, Federica Formiga states: 'the starting point for this issue is different, because in contemporary democracies, censorship doesn't disappear simply because it no longer takes the form of a decree. It changes form, it changes language, it changes location. It becomes pressure, dissuasion, the threat of litigation, preventive review, professional isolation, requests for relocation, algorithmic filtering, social media campaigns, fear of losing funding, fear of jeopardizing one's job. Precisely for this reason, talking about censorship today means shifting attention from the mere act of prohibition to the process that makes it possible. It's not enough to ask whether a book has been banned; we must ask who exerted the pressure, at what point in the process it occurred, what criteria were invoked, what procedures existed or were lacking, who was able to respond and who chose to remain silent.'

IPA's Director of Communications and Freedom to Publish, James Taylor worked with 4 students (Emma Viero, Jimena Ledezma, Seoyoon Yang and Gregory Wagner) from the Graduate Institute in Geneva through an Applied Research Programme, to produce a contribution looking at Freedom to Publish in Europe and North America: Legal Foundations, Contemporary Challenges and Responses. The academic and scientific journal "Publishing Eco-system: International Journal of Publishing Studies" presents itself as a space in which to discuss different and mutually integrated aspects concerning the production, distribution, and communication of books in the various spheres of the publishing supply chain, with particular attention devoted to the mechanisms that contribute to bringing the book from the publisher to the reader, models constructed by the relationships between promoters, distributors, marketing men, librarians, and booksellers, who are increasingly protagonists of rapid changes and generators of new instances.
