The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 4:52 a.m., Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 814 S. Lucas St. Reports indicated a fire in the downstairs of the residence with people possibly in the building. An occupant was awakened by the home's smoke alarm.
Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes of being dispatched and encountered fire showing from a first floor window. Two occupants had safely exited the residence prior to the fire department's arrival.
The fire was brought under control within seven minutes and remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal's Office. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. Total damages are estimated at $25,000.
As a result of the investigation into the fire, Iowa City Police have arrested Cara J. Hanson, 20, of Iowa City. Hanson faces one count of First-Degree Arson.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, all persons are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. No further information is available.
The occupant displaced by the fire was assisted by the American Red Cross.
The Iowa City Fire Department was assisted by the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Iowa City Police, and MidAmerican Energy.
