Visit of the EU Trade Commissioner, Maroš Šefčovič, to Australia

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and CPTPP trade ministers launch first EU-CPTPP Trade and Investment Dialogue in Melbourne, Australia.

In November 2025, EU Trade Commissioner, Maroš Šefčovič, and his twelve counterparts, visited Australia to launch the first EU-CPTPP Trade and Investment Dialogue.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed on 8 March 2018 by Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam.

Cooperation between Europe and the CPTPP aims to deliver trade and economic benefits, with the EU and CPTPP accounting for nearly 30% of global GDP.

Discussions during Šefčovič's visit covered trade diversification, digital trade, trade and investment facilitation, supply chain resilience, and the global trade environment, including WTO reform.

In a joint statement post dialogue, the EU and CPTPP declared their shared commitment to rules-based, fair and open trade.

Šefčovič said: "As the world's largest trading bloc (with a global trade share of close to 16%), the EU remains committed to an open, rules-based and stable trade environment. Our reinforced cooperation with CPTPP partners therefore speaks volumes about the importance of our shared approach to trade. But this goes beyond a symbolic signal, as we are now set to focus our efforts on clear, mutually beneficial results across the five priority areas."
