Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco Álvarez Meets with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco Álvarez met today in Washington, D.C. with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

During the meeting, both officials highlighted the major progress made on security, the most significant in the entire region, particularly in combating drug and arms trafficking and transnational organized crime. Secretary Velasco reiterated the importance of continuing to work on the basis of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared responsibility, mutual trust, and collaboration without subordination.

They also discussed the progress achieved on the issue of irregular migration and continued the ongoing dialogue on protecting and respecting the human rights of Mexican nationals in the United States during immigration proceedings.

Secretary Velasco was accompanied at the meeting by Ambassador Roberto Lazzeri Montaño; Undersecretary for North America Cristina Planter Riebeling; Head of the Unit for Diplomacy, Foreign Policy, and Interagency Coordination Efraín Guadarrama Pérez; Chief of Staff to Ambassador Roberto Lazzeri Montaño, Carlos Botello; Director General for Special Affairs and Border Modernization Oliver Arroyo Ramón; and Head of Border and Special Affairs Rafael Saucedo Fuentes.
