Kutztown University Foundation Breaks Ground on Solar Array to Generate Long-Term Support for KU

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University Foundation (KUF) broke ground Thursday, Sept. 24, on a new 4.6-megawatt solar array. The net income earned from this project will enable the Foundation to provide additional scholarships and resources and will serve as a significant new source of support for Kutztown University.

The solar array will be located on approximately 15 acres of KUF-owned land west of Golden Bear Village South and will include approximately 8,000 bifacial solar panels. Once operational, the array is expected to generate approximately 6.2 million kilowatt-hours of power in its first year.

"As the needs of students continue to evolve, so must the ways we generate the resources to support them," said Alex Ogeka, executive director of the Kutztown University Foundation. "Philanthropy will always be at the heart of our work, but building a strong, sustainable future also requires us to think creatively about diverse funding streams. This project allows us to leverage an existing Foundation asset to create a new source of revenue that will benefit Kutztown University students for decades to come."

In addition to its long-term financial impact, the project represents a significant investment in renewable energy. The array is expected to eliminate the equivalent of approximately 4,166 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Its annual environmental impact is comparable to removing approximately 1,000 traditional passenger vehicles from the road, eliminating the use of 500,000 gallons of gasoline, or providing electricity for approximately 700 average American homes for one year.

Seth Berry, chief operating officer of Solar Renewable Energy, LLC (SRE), the Foundation's partner on the project, said the array demonstrates the potential for renewable energy projects to deliver both environmental and financial benefits.

Construction of the solar array is expected to begin in October 2026, pending final township approval, with completion anticipated in summer 2027.
