Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 To Champion Emerging Sports Photographers And Drive More Women Behind The Lens

Getty Images and World Rugby joining forces on a unique programme to train the next generation of sports photographers.

London - 10 September 2025: Getty Images (NYSE: GETY), a preeminent global visual content creator and marketplace, has partnered with World Rugby to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering the next generation of sports photographers. This collaboration provides aspiring visual storytellers with an unparalleled opportunity to develop their craft on the global stage of Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 in England.

As part of the programme, participants will gain exclusive hands-on experience working pitch-side at one of the world's most prestigious international sporting events. Under the mentorship of Getty Images' award-winning sports photographers, a group made of students from Nottingham Trent University's BA (Hons) Sports Photography course and up-and-coming female photographers are capturing the intensity, emotion, and defining moments of the tournament, learning first-hand how to operate in a high-pressure, fast-paced professional environment.

Aligned with the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 mission to foster inclusivity and create greater opportunities in the industry, the programme places a strong emphasis on female participation. Ten out of the 14 young photographers involved are women, reflecting World Rugby's ambition to help close the gender gap in sports photography and inspire more women to pursue careers behind the lens. By ensuring women are not only represented but championed, the initiative reinforces rugby's wider commitment to being a sport where everyone belongs, regardless of background, gender, or way of life.

The first cohort of participants showcased their skills during the Ireland v Japan and South Africa v Brazil matches on 24 August at Franklin's Gardens, Northampton. A second group continued the programme by covering the Italy v Brazil and France v South Africa fixtures on 7 September at the same venue. These unique opportunities gave emerging photographers the chance to capture high-quality imagery on the international stage, building confidence, expertise, and portfolio content that will be invaluable for their careers. The best students will be selected to also cover the much-anticipated Women's Rugby World Cup final on 27 September at Allianz Stadium.

Beyond the technical skills learned, participants immersed themselves in the electric atmosphere of Women's Rugby World Cup. They engaged with professionals across media operations, networked with industry leaders, and experienced the behind-the-scenes workings of Getty Images during a world-class sporting event. The initiative provides not only career-defining training but also a holistic insight into what it takes to succeed in the highly competitive world of sports photography.

Laurence Griffiths, Director Sport Content at Getty Images, said: "We're proud to support the next generation of visual storytellers who will shape the future of sports media and capture the women's game with the passion and professionalism it deserves."

Sarah Massey, Managing Director of the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025, added: "This programme is about much more than photography - it's about creating opportunities, inspiring the next generation, and making sure women have a stronger presence in sports media. Rugby is a sport where everyone belongs, and initiatives like this reinforce that message by opening doors for diverse voices and talents to shine. We are proud to work with Getty Images to help future photographers take their first steps on the world stage."

This photography development programme complements Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 Content Creator Programme, launched earlier this year, which provides young creators with opportunities to showcase their skills across digital and social channels being embedded with participating teams. Together, these initiatives underline World Rugby's commitment to empowering the next generation of visual storytellers and taking women's rugby to the next level, on and off the pitch.
