A holiday message from President Tarhule, December 9, 2025

Fellow Redbirds,

As we near the end of the fall semester, I want to take a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, and staff. The achievements of Illinois State University are the result of the collaborative efforts of our entire Redbird community.

I am proud of everything we have accomplished together, including a strong fall semester enrollment of 21,994 students, marking the fourth consecutive year of growth and the highest enrollment since 1991. Additionally, our retention rate continues to improve, and for the first time since 2009, our six-year graduation rate has also increased significantly. We successfully achieved accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission; launched a new strategic plan, Excellence by Design: 2024-2030; prevented a budget deficit; and introduced a new hybrid, performance-based budget model. These achievements reflect our shared commitment to student access and success, as well as our focus on academic excellence and financial stability.

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, we will celebrate more than 1,259 undergraduate and graduate students at Winter Commencement. Each graduate has a unique story about how Illinois State has impacted and improved their lives, and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to every one of you. I hope that all Redbirds celebrate with our graduates and their families and take pride in this important milestone.

My lasting holiday wish is that we, as Redbirds, continue to work together not only to help Illinois State overcome the current challenges in higher education but also to position the University to thrive, regardless of the circumstances. I look forward to all that we can accomplish together with anticipation and excitement.

I wish all Redbirds joy and peace this holiday season. Please share quality time and make lasting memories with friends and loved ones. May the new year bring us more successes, good health, and fulfillment.
