ANN ARBOR (Oct. 21, 2026) - HAP CareSource, a nonprofit managed care organization, brought members and guests to Crisler Center for a men's health experience focused on prioritizing preventive care and addressing health concerns early.
Attendees participated in a Q&A with Michigan coach Mike Boynton and a discussion about the importance of health screenings and preventive health visits. Participants also had the opportunity to watch the University of Michigan vs Eastern Michigan University men's exhibition basketball game.
HAP CareSource is a Michigan health plan serving Medicaid members across Southeast Michigan, Detroit, Flint, Jackson and Lansing, and MI Coordinated Health (MICH) members in Wayne and Macomb counties.
"Our data show a meaningful gap in preventive-care use between men and women, particularly among Black members," said Sarah Musser, president of HAP CareSource. "That gives us an opportunity to engage members in familiar settings, make preventive-care conversations more comfortable and help more men take the next step."
These rates reflect a broader issue in Michigan. According to a 2024 survey from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the percentage of male adults who had a routine medical checkup in the past year was more than five percentage points lower than that of female adults.
Felicia Brabec, a clinical psychologist and former state representative, joined members for the post-game discussion alongside Healing Brothers United (HBU), which facilitated the conversation.
"Preventive care gives people an opportunity to stay engaged in their health and identify concerns earlier," said Brabec. "Bringing this message into a welcoming community setting can help more men feel comfortable starting the conversation and attending to their physical and mental health care needs."
