Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day: Minister Ellis

"Every day, police and peace officers across Alberta make a commitment to serve others, knowing they may be called to place themselves in harm's way. That same commitment has guided generations of officers over the past 150 years as they have served communities across our province with honour, integrity and dedication. Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices that service can demand and of the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Since 1876, 108 police and peace officers have died in the line of duty in Alberta. Each of them swore an oath to protect public safety and lost their life while serving others. We owe them our lasting gratitude. Behind every name we remember today is a person who answered the call to serve, a family forever changed and a legacy that continues to inspire those who wear the uniform today. We honour their memory, remember their sacrifice and reflect on the unwavering commitment they demonstrated to keep Albertans safe.

"We also recognize the families, friends and colleagues who continue to carry these losses. Their strength reminds us that the sacrifices of this profession are shared not only by those who wear the uniform, but also by those who stand beside them. Every shift worked, every emergency answered and every risk taken is shared by the loved ones waiting for them to come home. It is a sacrifice that all Albertans recognize and appreciate, and we are grateful to the families and loved ones who stand beside our police and peace officers throughout their service.
