Operational Performance
BNSF operating teams are focused on delivering improved service performance across the network. Car velocity and terminal dwell both improved modestly versus the prior week, though each was softer than the prior month as several weather-related disruptions impacted the network, including excessive heat across portions of BNSF's Northern Corridor in Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming. The extreme temperatures required temporary speed restrictions in certain areas, though cooler conditions forecast for the weekend are expected to allow those restrictions to be lifted. Local service compliance remained around 90%. Completion of the Winslow, Arizona, yard expansion this week is expected to further enhance network fluidity and operational flexibility across the Southern Transcon.
Earlier this week, heavy rainfall caused multiple washouts on Union Pacific's Del Rio Subdivision between Uvalde and Hondo, Texas, temporarily suspending rail access to the Eagle Pass gateway and affecting cross-border traffic between the United States and Mexico. The line is expected to remain out of service for several days as restoration work continues, though additional precipitation could affect repair timelines. The outage has contributed to congestion at both Eagle Pass and El Paso, and BNSF is coordinating with interchange partners to manage traffic flows during the recovery process. Customers should expect cross-border traffic to continue normalizing into next week.
Service Expectations for the Week Ahead
Heavy rainfall and localized flooding remain possible across portions of Texas and the Southwest through the weekend and early next week. BNSF teams continue to monitor conditions and will adjust operations as needed to support safe and reliable service. Elsewhere, weather conditions are expected to be generally favorable across much of the BNSF network.
Seasonal track maintenance activity continues across the network as part of BNSF's annual capital program to support long-term network reliability. In the north, maintenance activity will continue moving across the Northern Corridor through the remainder of the summer, including work across multiple subdivisions in Montana, Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
