Islington Council Leader and Chief Executive condemn attack at Sydney Hanukkah event

The Leader of Islington Council and the Chief Executive have condemned today's (Sunday, 14 December) attack at a Hanukkah menorah lighting in Sydney, Australia.

In a joint statement, the Leader of Islington Council, Cllr Una O'Halloran, and Chief Executive, Victoria Lawson, said: "We are deeply shocked and saddened by the horrific attack at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah menorah lighting in Sydney. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, those injured, and the Australian Jewish community.

"This senseless act of violence, targeting a peaceful celebration of light and unity, stands in stark contrast to our values. Here in Islington, as we prepare for our own menorah lighting, we stand together against hatred and antisemitism.

"Our menorah lighting will be a moment to come together as one community-showing resilience, compassion, and unwavering support for our Jewish neighbours. We reaffirm our commitment to building a safe, inclusive Islington where everyone can freely and confidently practice their faith and celebrate their traditions without fear."
