Steve and Kim Finley, both Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) employees, recently hosted their annual Breast Cancer Fund Bike Ride.
This popular event brings the community together to honor and raise funds for those currently fighting or those who have bravely fought breast cancer. This year, the ride raised an incredible $30,000 for the SOMC Breast Cancer Compassion Fund and had over 90 riders participate.
Dr. Vincent Scarpinato of SOMC Surgical Associates and Wendi Waugh, Administrative Director of Cancer and Infusion Services, created this fund 19 years ago. The fund provides support for breast cancer patients in need. The fund helps cover essentials such as medication co-pays, transportation to and from treatment, and other necessities that can ease the burden of care during a difficult time.
Steve began working with Dr. Scarpinato and saw firsthand the challenges faced by breast cancer patients and their families. Wanting to give back to the patients and families he encountered every day, Steve and Kim created the bike ride as a way to make a lasting difference. They have continued the event year after year, raising nearly $213k for the fund and turning their passion for giving back into meaningful support for local patients.
"None of this would be possible without our sponsors and the community," Kim said. "We are so grateful for their support."
Thanks to the generosity of riders, sponsors and community members, the annual bike ride continues to make a meaningful impact on breast cancer patients and their families throughout the region.
