Cassidy Introduces Bill to Strengthen Election Security, Give Accountability to Voters

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) introduced legislation to require states to conduct open primaries for federal offices and establish additional guardrails in congressional elections. The legislation includes commonsense provisions including requiring voter photo identification and placing limits on states' ability to gerrymander congressional districts. Despite broad public support for these provisions, Democrats rejected the proposals, even though they have previously expressed support for measures intended to give voters greater influence in the electoral process.

"The political system should serve the people, not be designed so that the people serve politicians. Forty-five percent of the American electorate are Independents. Some Republicans and some Democrats want to vote for the person not for the party. Open primaries address all of this. Power to the people," said Dr. Cassidy.
