Ranking Member Shaheen Pushes for Congress to Prohibit Taking Greenland by Passing the NATO Unity Protection Act

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released a statement after President Trump's repeated threats to acquire Greenland during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"I urge my colleagues in Congress immediately upon the return of the Senate to take up my bipartisan legislation with Senator Murkowski to prevent the Administration from acquiring the territory of a NATO ally without their its consent. Congress must codify an ironclad prohibition against a military intervention. The weeks of threats against Denmark and NATO allies by the Trump Administration have done lasting damage to the transatlantic alliance, and Americans will pay the cost of a rupture to our longstanding economic ties with Europe. Congress must step in and pass my legislation to stop any funds being used to continue a senseless campaign that only benefits Russia and China."
