Minister Ahn Gyu-back's first official visit: engaging with the Army Special Warfare Command.
Committed to restoring the damaged honor and pride of soldiers.
In his first field unit inspection after taking office, Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back expressed his commitment to rebuilding a military faithful to its mission and dedicated to the people.
In the afternoon of July 28, Minister Ahn visited the Biho Unit of the Army Special Warfare Command. The Defense Ministry explained that among the many operational units at the front and rear requiring inspection by the newly appointed Minister, the Biho Unit was selected because Minister Ahn emphasized that addressing the concerns of soldiers affected during the unlawful emergency martial law and restoring their morale is a top priority.
Minister Ahn received a briefing on the unit stabilization measures implemented for the 707th Special Missions Group, which was mobilized during the emergency martial law incident. He also met with the Group's soldiers to engage in dialogue and open communication. He said, "I was saddened to learn that the morale and pride of the Special Warfare Command soldiers-who have always served with unwavering dedication-had been seriously damaged. I came here in person to offer you comfort and support."
Minister Ahn listened closely to the soldiers' concerns and pledged to restore the pride and honor of all affected troops, especially those in the Army Special Warfare Command. Minister Ahn stated, "I will take all necessary measures to ensure that the soldiers who were mobilized during the unlawful emergency martial law can regain their confidence and restore their honor, so they may once again devote themselves wholeheartedly to the defense of our nation."
He stressed, "As Defense Minister, I will uphold civilian control of the military to ensure that our armed forces strictly maintain political neutrality, remain dedicated to their fundamental missions, and are rebuilt into 'a military for the people' that is beloved and respected by the nation."
