Celebrated Cherokee painter featured in new exhibit

ROSE, Okla. - Explore the artistic journey of a celebrated Cherokee painter, mentor and storyteller in a new exhibit at the Saline Courthouse Museum.

"Ron Mitchell: Painting Our Stories" is now open through Jan. 9, 2027.

For years, Cherokee National Treasure Ron Mitchell sensed something was missing from both his life and art, but he soon found the answers in the stories, history and heritage of the Cherokee people.

From his early black-and-white architectural studies to the vibrant paintings he is widely known for today, Mitchell's art tells stories of Cherokee history and culture that he has learned throughout his life.

"Ron's career is a varied and fascinating study of Cherokee stories and experiences uniquely rendered," said Karen Shade-Lanier, Cherokee Nation Cultural Tourism exhibits manager." "Whether working through optical illusion or making a statement on Cherokee history, Ron's voice resonates beyond the canvas."

Guests can learn more about this journey through more than 10 works from Mitchell featured in the exhibit, including drawings, paintings, prints and more.
