Crews move into phase two in the I-70 Exit 203 Interchange in Frisco Project

Summit County - After a successful first part of the construction season, the Colorado Department of Transportation with contractor Zak Dirt will begin phase two of the I-70 Exit 203 Interchange in Frisco project starting this week. As part of this phase, traffic on CO 9 will shift onto the new underpass bridge deck, which was built and poured in phase one of the project.

The I-70 Exit 203 Interchange Project began this spring and reconfigures CO 9, Lusher Court and Dillon Dam Road. The project aims to reduce congestion, improve safety and add bicycle and pedestrian connections in the area.

"Reaching phase two on schedule is a significant milestone for this two-year project," said CDOT Region 3 Transportation Director Jason Smith. "We know construction isn't easy on the traveling public-especially those who pass through this area frequently-but as one of the major gateways into Summit County, this corridor will ultimately offer a safer, smoother experience for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians alike."

During phase one, crews focused on the new CO 9 underpass bridge, creating a frontage road that will link Dillon Dam Road and Lusher Court in 2027. Crews installed the bridge's foundations, girders, deck, wing walls and adjacent retaining walls. Crews have also made stormwater drainage improvements throughout the project, replaced the sanitary sewer between Dillon Dam Road and CO 9, and begun foundation work for widening the existing I-70 bridge at Exit 203.

Phase 2 Traffic Impacts

• During the second phase, a temporary traffic switch will occur at the interchange of I-70, CO 9 and Dillon Dam Road using the recently constructed bridge deck
• Work is expected to occur Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with occasional weekend work.
• Single and double lane closures are expected on both I-70 and CO 9 during nighttime hours from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Exit 203 Interchange Project Benefits

• Mobility: Interchange improvements will reduce travel delays caused by crashes and congestion for all users, including the freight industry and guests.
• Safety: The project will increase traveler safety for multimodal users, including new bicycle and pedestrian connections across CO 9 and I-70.

• Watch for workers. Drive with caution.

• Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
