HDOT to improve runway at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport

HONOLULU - As part of ongoing and planned airfield improvements at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), the Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) will perform intermittent nightly runway closures from Sept. 8, 2026, through April 2027.

Scheduled closures and restrictions are as follows:

Sept. 8 to Oct. 26 - Runway 4L-22R will close nightly from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Oct. 26 to Nov. 9 - Runway 4R-22L will close nightly from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Sept. 8 to Sep. 10 - Runway 8L-26R will close nightly from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Sept. 10 to Nov. 13 - Runway 8L-26R will be shortened to 7,000 feet.

Additional closures and restrictions will be announced as they are scheduled.

HDOT's Runway 8L Rehabilitation Phase 1 Project and the Taxiway A Reconstruction Project will utilize these operating restrictions and closures to access the runway to realign runway lights and markings and conduct environmental sampling, respectively. The project work is coordinated such that either runway 8L or runway 4R will be available for operations at all times.

During these impacted timeframes, aircraft will utilize the alternate runways, 8R-26L, 4R-22L, as well as 4L-22R, as needed, to perform airport operations. General aviation traffic may expect extended delays due to the rerouting of aircraft based on the runways available - and traffic management by the Hawai'i Air Traffic Control Facility.

The timeframe for the runway work was selected to ensure necessary closures would start after the peak summer travel season and end before the holiday travel season.

Travelers may experience delays departing to or arriving from HNL. Increased noise may be experienced in surrounding neighborhoods, particularly in the 'Ewa and Pearl City areas due to rerouted air traffic. HDOT appreciates the community's patience and understanding while the needed work is conducted to continue safe operations at HNL and properly plan future improvements. Completion times for the closures and shortened condition of the runways may change based on work progress, weather delays, or other work to support airport operations.
