Washington, DC- Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan released the statement below regarding the House passage of legislation to alleviate rising health care costs. A video of the Congressman's remarks is available here.
My job is to make sure each and every day that I make life affordable and a little bit easier for individuals, and that they have access to healthcare.
Today, I voted in support of a clean, three-year extension of the ACA enhanced premium tax credits to protect healthcare access for Northwest Indiana residents.
Due to the uncertainty about the extensions of these tax credits, health insurance companies have been unable to accurately predict premiums for the coming year. Forcing Americans to renew their health insurance plans without knowing exactly how high their premiums will be in 2026, creating uncertainty.
This is causing severe anxiety for constituents, like Margaret from Gary, who can no longer afford healthcare for 2026 because her ACA coverage increased from $343 to over $1,000 per month. She has had to make difficult decisions to forgo health insurance, and pray she does not have a healthcare emergency this year.
In Indiana's First Congressional District, 24,000 people rely on the ACA, these tax credits for their health care access. These tax credits are necessary for so many people in Northwest Indiana, like Sarah, a small business owner from La Porte, who runs her business with her husband while raising two children. Her family relies on the ACA for healthcare coverage and they're seeing their premiums go up from $1,500 to $4,000 a month.
And Kirk from Valparaiso, a cancer survivor who relies on the ACA for essential treatment. His premium payments are barely affordable for him and his wife. Any increase in the payment would make him unable to afford the healthcare needs.
Those stories that I shared with you are the individuals who are calling into my office, wanting me to take action. And today we accomplished that. Hoosiers are already struggling with the rising costs of food and utilities every single day, leaving many unable to make ends meet at the end of the month.
It is my hope that this extension will be approved by the Senate, and the Americans who rely on these tax credits can avoid skyrocketing health insurance premiums and devastating lost coverage. The goal of the vote today was to make it a little bit easier and to make sure that those individuals who rely on the ACA for healthcare have the ability to have access, and for everyday Americans to be able to provide for their families and to be able to provide healthcare.
