Australia: Ericsson to supply a private 5G Digital Radio System for Queensland's rail network

Ericsson will build a private 5G network to support digital train control on South-East Queensland's next-generation rail network.

Australia, 30 July 2026 - Ericsson has been selected to supply a private 5G communications platform for the first stage of South-East Queensland's next-generation rail network, part of the Queensland Government's The Wave rail programme linking Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Working with UGL Transport and Frequentis, Ericsson will deliver a 5G-enabled digital radio system that will provide the communications foundation for new signalling and train control.

Ericsson will design, supply, integrate and commission the private 5G network for the northern section of the rail network, including the radio access network and a geographically redundant 5G core with cloud infrastructure. Using spectrum in the 1900 megahertz band, the system will support the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 digital signalling solution being delivered by Alstom and is designed to evolve towards the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) standard.
