The Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) unveiled "Icons of Chicago," three large-scale architectural models on long-term display at Chicago O'Hare International Airport. Designed by GFT in close collaboration with CAC and CDA, the installation celebrates Chicago's architectural identity near gate M32 in the Terminal 5 East Extension, which GFT also designed.
The display features Marina City, 875 North Michigan Avenue (formerly the John Hancock Center), and Willis Tower. GFT paired a display base inspired by CAC's signature red dot with C-shaped seating, inviting travelers to pause and enjoy Chicago's skyline in miniature. Positioned beside an iconic concourse column along the main passenger route, the installation integrates CAC's brand with the surrounding architecture.
Mark Stromberg, AIA, LEED AP, vice president and operations manager, Central Architecture at GFT, said, "This exhibit celebrates Chicago's world-renowned architecture while creating a memorable moment for travelers within a space designed by GFT. It was made possible through the outstanding collaboration between the Chicago Architecture Center, City of Chicago, and the project team."
