Client Spotlight: Chris Moir

Meet Chris

Chris Moir is a physical therapist at McFarland Clinic in Nevada, Iowa, where he has been working for the past seven months. His path to physical therapy began with an undergraduate degree in kinesiology at Iowa State University, followed by a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Des Moines University.

Chris shares that his favorite part of his job is building relationships with his patients, having meaningful conversations, and seeing their progress over several weeks or months.

Working with IDB

Chris was diagnosed with Stargardt disease in 2012 and connected with the Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB) in the spring of 2015. Through IDB, he received educational support that helped him navigate school and prepare for his future career. During his senior year of high school, his vocational rehabilitation counselor helped him obtain assistive technology to support his success in the classroom, including magnification tools, screen readers, and a CCTV for paper tests. Throughout his education, Chris shares that his VR counselors were accommodating and resourceful, always willing to answer questions and explore different technology options to meet his needs.

Final Insights

Chris is grateful for the support he received from IDB and the role it played in helping him navigate his education and pursue his goals. Today, he enjoys a rewarding career as a physical therapist, where he finds fulfillment in helping patients reach their goals and seeing their progress over time.

"I would absolutely recommend getting services from IDB. I think it was super helpful financially, but also just having someone who knows a lot about navigating some of the challenges with getting through school. Because vision can make something like school a lot tougher."
