HARRISBURG - To address the persistent and growing demand for affordable housing, Sens. Greg Rothman (R-34), Joe Picozzi (R-5), and Pat Stefano (R-32) are introducing legislation that will encourage construction of residential homes in areas where unmet needs exist.
The bill will give municipalities the opportunity to simplify their approval process and reduce red tape, empowering local governments to expedite housing availability as desired.
"Pennsylvania's housing shortage is driving up costs for both renters and homebuyers, limiting economic growth and making the goal of homeownership unaffordable for many," Rothman said. "Our legislation will help get state government out of the way and give municipalities tools they can use to reduce delays and costs for both buyers and renters."
"Excessive regulation and process delays have too often prevented construction and made quality homes less attainable," Stefano said. "This legislation will improve efficiency and help get homes built where they are needed most."
"Communities know their needs best," Picozzi said. "This gives them greater flexibility to plan and approve housing in a way that works locally."
Forming a robust strategy to increase housing supply, improve affordability, and stimulate economic activity is a key focus for the Senate this year. In addition to this measure, other Senate bills to address housing needs are being introduced by legislators from across the state to ensure our commonwealth remains a competitive and desirable place to live, work and raise a family.
"Housing must be available and affordable to both keep the next generation here and attract young people beginning careers and starting families," Rothman said.
