Insurance tips for spring storms

Spring typically brings the most severe thunder and hail to Texas. The transition from cool to warm weather can create a lot of energy and moisture - and storms.

Use these tips to make sure your insurance is ready:

  • Check your home insurance policy to see if it covers wind damage. If not, ask your agent about windstorm insurance.
  • Consider comprehensive insurance coverage for your car. It covers damage to your car from flood, hail, fire, and wind.
  • Put your agent and insurance company in your phone's contact list. Make copies of your policy's declaration page and auto ID card. Email them to yourself so you can get to them away from home.
  • Consider flood insurance. Most home insurance doesn't cover damage from flooding. Don't wait long: flood policies usually take effect 30 days after purchase. Ask your agent about flood insurance.
  • Remove dead tree limbs and branches that hang over your house. Tie down outdoor furniture and other items that the wind can pick up.
  • Make a room-by-room home inventory with pictures and video. This could help if you file an insurance claim.
