SIPRI Director appointed to top UN disarmament advisory board

Today, the Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Karim Haggag, was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to serve as a member of the Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (ABDM). The appointment begins in January 2026.

Established in 1978, the ABDM provides guidance to the secretary-general on issues related to arms limitation and disarmament, including studies and research undertaken within the UN system. Members of the ABDM are appointed in their personal capacities and are selected for their expertise in disarmament, non-proliferation and international peace and security. The ABDM also serves as the Board of Trustees of the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), offering strategic oversight to UNIDIR's programme of work and financial planning.

Through this appointment, SIPRI will contribute to international discussions on disarmament, emerging technologies and global security at a moment of growing geopolitical complexity.
