The Cultural Events Series at Frostburg State University will present a free concert of patriotic selections and standard showpieces from the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" Brass and Woodwind Quintets on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in FSU's Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. Known for their exceptional musicianship, these ensembles perform at significant national and international events and promote international goodwill while showcasing the versatility and talent of their trained soldiers.
Both ensembles are part of the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own," which has been the premier musical organization of the U.S. Army since 1922, when Army Chief of Staff General of the Armies John J. "Black Jack" Pershing directed that the band be organized, built on the tradition of the European military bands he had heard during World War I. "Pershing's Own" provides music support for the leadership of the United States, to include all branches of government, and to a wide spectrum of national and international events in support of soldiers and their families, public diplomacy, memorial affairs, community and international relations and recruiting initiatives.
Since its inception in 1972, The U.S. Army Brass Quintet has gained a reputation as one of the most highly respected and sought after groups of its kind. The ensemble has appeared before audiences and dignitaries in 48 states and 14 foreign countries. Founded in 1996, The U.S. Army Band Woodwind Quintet is one of the Army's premier chamber ensembles and is frequently called upon in support of high-level military and civilian events at the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon and beyond.
Prior to the performance, the artists will lead student musicians in a masterclass at 4 p.m. in Pealer Recital Hall. The public is invited to observe.
The performance is free, but tickets are required. If this performance is sold out, any unclaimed will-call tickets and vacant reserved seats will be released at 7:15 p.m. to patrons waiting in the lobby. The University Box Office, located in FSU's Lane University Center, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please visit the CES webpage at ces.frostburg.edu or contact the box office at 1-866-849-9237 or 301-687-3137.
