In preparation of San Marino becoming an associate Member of the European Union
Ambassador Martin Selmayr was honoured to participate for the third time as EU Ambassador to San Marino and as part of the diplomatic corps, in the solemn ceremony of the change of the Captains Regent, who are the Heads of State of this unique European country that is geographically fully surrounded by Italy. San Marino and the EU share a common history and common values. San Marino is already part of our customs union and uses the euro as its currency. Pending ratification, it will now also become part of our single market by spring 2026. In geopolitically volatile times, is very good to see our European family further intensifying and deepening its mutual bonds.
After 10 years of negotiations, EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, Responsible for Trade & Economic Security, used the occasion of the traditional change of Captains Regent on the Monte Titano to say that he expects San Marino to become an associate Member of the European Union by Spring 2026. The EU has finalised over the past months an ambitious Association Agreement with the oldest still existing republic of the world.
