Brampton Fire and Emergency Services encourages residents to stay fire-safe as outdoor season begins

​​BRAMPTON, ON - As warmer days return, residents across Brampton head outdoors to enjoy barbecues, cultural celebrations and time with family and friends. These seasonal activities are an important part of community life, but they also bring an increased risk of preventable fires when safety is overlooked.

To support residents through the season, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) is launching its seasonal fire safety campaign, sharing practical guidance and timely reminders to help keep homes, gatherings and outdoor spaces safe. ​

Check outdoor equipment before use

Before lighting a BBQ, smoker or any outdoor cooking equipment, check it is clean, functioning properly and placed a safe distance from buildings, railings and combustible materials. A quick inspection can help prevent serious incidents. ​

Never leave cooking unattended

Unattended cooking is one of the leading causes of residential fires. Stay present while cooking so flare-ups or hazards can be addressed before they escalate. ​

Be mindful when smoking outdoors

Improperly discarded cigarette materials can easily ignite dry grass, planters or balcony materials. Use proper containers and avoid disposing of cigarette butts on the ground or near flammable surfaces. ​

Understand open-air burning rules

Open-air burning is not permitted in Brampton without proper authorization. Residents should review local regulations and consider safer alternatives when planning activities involving open flames.

Fireworks are prohibited in Brampton

Under the Fireworks By-law, the use, purchase, discharge, possession, display, sale and offering of fireworks is prohibited, except for City-led events. ​

Penalties for failing to comply range from $500 to $1,000 and may reach up to $100,000 if a court summons is issued. ​
