Pembina Gorge State Park and Rough Rider State Park campsite reservations open May 5

BISMARCK, N.D. - Campers eager to explore two of North Dakota's most scenic destinations can begin planning their summer and fall getaways. The reservation window for campsites at Pembina Gorge State Park and Rough Rider State Park opens Tuesday, May 5, 2026. Visitors are encouraged to map out their trips and secure their preferred dates once reservations become available.

Pembina Gorge State Park, the department's newest state park, is nearing completion and will open for camping on June 9. In celebration of the opening of North Dakota's 14th state park, campsite fees are marked down 14% for the season. Campsites include electrical service and water hookups. Sewer connections will also be available at select sites; visitors should check the reservation system for details. The new campground includes access to rugged terrain, forested hills, and miles of trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking, OHV and horseback riding.

The public is invited to a dedication ceremony to celebrate the new park on June 3 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event will feature a formal program, the park's first s'mores, guided hikes, park tours and a variety of self-guided activities.

Rough Rider State Park (formerly Sully Creek State Park near Medora) will open its redesigned campground on July 7, featuring additional campsites with electrical, water and equestrian amenities. Select sites will also provide sewer service. The park offers a peaceful Badlands setting with nearby outdoor recreation opportunities.

"Opening these parks for summer camping is a significant step in expanding outdoor recreation access across North Dakota," said Cody Schulz, director of the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department. "With America 250 on the horizon, there is no better time to celebrate our outdoor heritage. We look forward to welcoming visitors for a great summer season."

Visitors should be aware that construction of new comfort stations is currently underway at both parks. While crews will be on-site during the camping season, the improvements are scheduled for completion later this year and are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the visitor experience. Rough Rider State Park's existing shower house will remain open while the new one is constructed. The new comfort stations offer modern restroom and shower amenities and are built with safety in mind as FEMA designated storm shelters, providing added protection for visitors during severe weather.

Despite construction activity, both parks will remain open for camping and outdoor recreation, and visitors can still expect a memorable experience surrounded by North Dakota's natural beauty.

The mission of the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department is to enrich generations through experiences that connect people and places.
