Keep your pets safe this July 4th holiday

With Fourth of July festivities on tap, Mission Viejo Animal Services is once again emphasizing the importance of holiday preparation for pets.

The shelter is teaming up with other Orange County animal shelters to encourage pet owners to prepare ahead of the festivities. July 4th is one of the highest intake days for animal shelters due to fireworks celebrations, which create loud noises and unfamiliar activity. Pet owners are urged to be prepared before festivities begin.

Remember the following tips:

  • Keep pets indoors during firework displays and turn on a TV, radio or fan.
  • Ensure your pet's collar is securely fitted with current license and tag.
  • Ensure microchip information is up to date.
  • Exercise your pet early in the day and keep them busy to alleviate stress
  • Keep summer party foods, drinks and supplies out of your pet's reach
  • If you're hosting guests, ask them to help keep an eye on your pets to make sure they don't escape. Placing notes on exit doors and gates can help both you and your guests remain vigilant.
  • Be sure to exercise your dog early in the day before fireworks begin.
  • Keep charcoal and glow sticks far from curious pets.

The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center will be closed on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Limited staff will be available to respond to emergency calls only. For assistance or to report your pet missing during the holiday, call 949-470-3045.
