More than 300 workers mobilized in Montevideo on June 23, 2026 to demand answers from Ambev over the future of the Cympay maltery in Paysandú, which has remained closed since March, leaving the entire workforce on unemployment insurance.
In Uruguay, AB InBev operates through its regional subsidiary Ambev, in which the multinational brewing company holds a controlling stake of approximately 62%.
The demonstration, organized by the IUF-affiliated Union of Workers and Employees of Norteña (SOEN) together with the Federation of Beverage Workers (FOEB), took place outside the National Directorate of Labour (DINATRA) while union representatives met with officials from the Ministry of Labour and company representatives.
Workers say they continue to face growing uncertainty as unemployment insurance is due to expire on 31 July, with no clear information from the company about the future of the plant or their jobs.
"We are looking for answers about the future of our jobs," said SOEN President Eduardo Alza.
The mobilization brought together SOEN members, FOEB affiliates, retired Norteña workers and representatives from other unions in a strong display of solidarity.
The meeting at the Ministry of Labour lasted more than three hours but produced no concrete progress. According to SOEN, the company was represented only by local management, who were unable to provide information or make decisions regarding the future of the facility.
The IUF stands in solidarity with SOEN, FOEB and the workers at the Cympay maltery in their demand for transparency, meaningful dialogue and secure employment.
