Gov. Rhoden Responds to Devastating Thunderstorm

PIERRE, S.D. - Today, Governor Larry Rhoden deployed resources to Highmore, SD, to assist the small town as it cleans up from a devastating thunderstorm. Governor Rhoden also visited Highmore to assess the damages and show support for the community.

"South Dakota might be a small state, but we are mighty," said Governor Larry Rhoden. "Immediately after the storm passed through, responders and volunteers quickly assessed the damage and began the recovery process. That's what South Dakotans do. We show up to take care of our neighbors. And we will continue to show up to help Highmore get back on its feet."

Around 6 am this morning, June 29, a thunderstorm packing 131-mph wind gusts moved through Highmore and the surrounding area. The straight-line winds uprooted trees, tore roofs from buildings, overturned vehicles, and bent wind turbines and other tower structures. The storm also knocked out power to the community. Only minor injuries have been reported.

Local officials have set up an emergency operations center to coordinate the emergency response. Governor Rhoden ordered the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Department of Transportation, South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, and nine inmates to provide perimeter security and debris removal resources. Volunteer resources from across the region also responded to assist with debris cleanup and providing food and water to displaced residents and responders.

A no-travel order remains in place for Highmore, and access to the town is limited to responders only as power lines are down and many streets are blocked by debris. Local and state officials will continue to assess damages and request additional resources if they are needed.
