August 12 North Cascades Fires Update

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. - Fire activity is moderate on the Border 2 Fire (estimated 13,604 acres total; 6,052 acres in the United States) with recent growth mainly on the southeast flank of the fire due to hot and dry weather this week. A smoke inversion persists in the Hozomeen area with better visibility on the south end of the fire.

Following weeks of prep, structure protection, defensive firing operations, and mop up, the Hozomeen area is now in patrol status. Yesterday crews completed structure protection operations on the Lightning Creek bridge with wrap, hose lay, and sprinklers as well point protection at other values at risk near Desolation. Today and over the next few shifts crews will focus on the values at risk in the Deerlick and Nightmare areas. A Type 3 helicopter is available for aerial support for reconnaissance and utilizing aerial delivered water when conditions safely allow.

Weather: A weak system moving across the area will bring slightly cooler temperatures and a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. A warming trend with dry conditions will elevate fire weather concerns for the end of the week and into the weekend.

Fire Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in effect beginning Monday, June 29. Campfires or the ignition of wood, briquettes, or any fuel in fire pits, fire pans, and barbeque grills, are banned in all portions of North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Gas or propane stoves, grills, or lanterns are permitted in campgrounds and wilderness areas for the use of cooking if there is no flammable material within three feet of the device.

Smoke Outlook: Smoke is present with hot and dry weather conditions and increased fire behavior, with a smoke layer settling over the general area. Take precautions when recreating outdoors when heavy smoke is present. Individuals who are sensitive to poor air quality or those with respiratory problems may want to limit outdoor activities. Air Space Restrictions: A temporary flight restriction is in place for the fire area. Drones are prohibited in the area, especially during emergency fire response. If you fly, we can't.
