TDMHSAS and TDEC Encourage Safe Medication Disposal During National Prescription Drug Takeback Day

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) are encouraging Tennesseans to clean out their medicine cabinets and safely dispose of unused, unwanted, or expired medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. local time.

Take Back Day provides a free, safe, and anonymous way to dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medications that are no longer needed or expired. Local coalitions and law enforcement work together to ensure that disposing is simple and effective. Clearing unused medications from the home helps reduce the risk of accidental poisoning and substance misuse while also protecting Tennessee's environment and waterways.

The statewide effort is made possible through partnerships between local law enforcement agencies, prevention coalitions, and community organizations that host collection sites across Tennessee. During Take Back Day events in April 2026, Tennesseans safely disposed of 23,384 pounds of medications. Residents can find a collection site near them by visiting TNtogether.com/takebackday.

"National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is an opportunity for Tennesseans to take one simple step toward making their home and community safer," said TDMHSAS Commissioner Marie Williams, LCSW. "Unused medications often remain in medicine cabinets long after they're needed. By taking just a few minutes to safely dispose of them, families can reduce the risk of misuse and keep potentially addictive medications out of the wrong hands."

"Properly disposing of unused medications prevents them from entering our waterways," said TDEC Commissioner David Salyers. "We encourage Tennesseans to participate and help make a difference in their communities."

For those unable to attend a Take Back Day event, Tennessee offers nearly 400 permanent prescription drug drop boxes, with at least one location in every county. These year-round collection sites, often located inside pharmacies and local law enforcement offices, provide a safe, secure, and anonymous way to dispose of medications at any time.
