The University of Wisconsin-Parkside and ArtRoot will unveil the Wall Poem design work of a UW-Parkside student and a Racine resident poet on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. in Racine. A brief history of the project will be shared, and the featured poet will recite her poem.
ArtRoot's Wall Poems of Racine No. 8 unveiling party will be held at 1236 13th St. The mural will be installed on the facade facing Washington Ave. Guests are invited to park along 13th Street and Washington Avenue. Please do not park in front of the mural.
Wall Poems of Racine No. 8 features an excerpt from Monica Thomas' poem "Rooftop." UW-Parkside student, Sophia Lefeber, created the design in Professor Carey Watter's graphic design course. Building owner, Fox Grace, offered the wall of their Pawstar RE building for the installation of the mural. Dean Tawwater of Tawwater Sign Company painted the mural. Funding was provided by the Uptown BID, Jeff and Mary Siuta, and the Osborne and Scekic Family Foundation through the Racine Arts Council.
Wall Poems of Racine is an ArtRoot project, in partnership with UW-Parkside and other community partners. The project celebrates local literary talent by pairing an excerpt from a poem written by a Racine poet with a design created by a student from an advanced graphic design community-based learning class at UW-Parkside.
Building owners with a wall in good condition who are interested in having a Wall Poem of Racine painted on their building should use the Contact page at https://www.artroot.org/contact. To learn more about this project and to see step-by-step photos for each wall poem, visit artroot.org/wallpoems.
