Simulation Is at the Core of Mission Training, and Aechelon Is at the Heart of Visual Simulation

Simulation is a broad word. Perhaps too broad.

Depending on who you ask, it can mean a desktop trainer, a fixed-base simulator, a full flight simulator, mission rehearsal, or a test environment for future systems. These are all simulations, but they are built differently and serve different use cases.

What they have in common is complexity and the need for precision. Effective flight simulation requires many inputs to work together so that what pilots see and experience in training reflects the conditions they prepare to encounter. Visual environments, sensor views, geographic information systems (GIS) data, weather, mission systems, and other inputs all must work together as one consistent training environment.

Before joining Shield AI, Aechelon spent almost three decades advancing visual simulation, delivering more than 1,200 systems and simulation programs with a footprint that includes F-35 and F-22 training environments. Today, the Aechelon portfolio builds on that experience to deliver reliable and efficient turnkey visual simulation and synthetic environments for pilot training and mission rehearsal.

What It Takes to Build the Right Training Environment

Creating the right training environment means keeping every representation of the world consistent. The out-the-window scene, radar return, EO/IR view, and terrain the host system flies over must all describe the same place at the same moment. The databases behind those views must also remain current, controlled, and available to the right systems.

This visual, sensor, and database environment is the part of the simulation system Aechelon delivers. Aechelon Nucleus generates correlated out-the-window and physics-based sensor views with the resolution, frame rate, fidelity, and stability required for demanding flight training. Aechelon Nexus stores, governs, and delivers the synthetic environment databases those views depend on.

Because both are proven, configurable turnkey products, programs can reduce the need for program-specific development, accelerate deployment, and lower total cost of ownership from initial integration through long-term sustainment.

Nucleus Brings the Mission Into View

When operoperators train for a mission, the visual representation needs to reflect the conditions they will face. Effective simulation depends on the suspension of disbelief. When the visuals remain stable, the display fades from the operator's attention, the brain switches to learning mode and the training session begins to feel like the mission. Stutters, dropped frames, or other visualization instabilities can quickly break that illusion.

But stability is only part of the equation. During a scenario an operator moves between the out-the-window scene, onboard sensors, and information from other systems. Those views also need to remain correlated, describing the same place at the same moment. If a ridgeline appears in one place out the window and somewhere else on radar, operators can build expectations the real aircraft will not honor. That is where poor correlation can lead to negative training.

Nucleus is Aechelon's turnkey image generator, bringing together software, databases, and the right commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware to deliver stability and correlation. It maintains the stable performance needed to preserve the suspension of disbelief while keeping terrain, objects, atmospheric conditions, and sensor perspectives correlated as the scenario unfolds.

Four Aechelon products are integrated within Nucleus to create and maintain that level of visualization excellence:

  • PC-Nova is the core software product generating the high-fidelity visual scenes and sensor views at the frame rates required for training
  • Geo-Specific Databases bring mission-relevant geography and terrain into the simulated environment
  • SkyBeam, on top of the default existing Databases, allows users to rapidly update mission-relevant synthetic environments from multiple data sources
  • Radar Toolkit generates radar imagery correlated with the same environment used for visual and other sensor views

Together with COTS hardware, these proven, configurable products allow customers to repeat scenarios across simulators and programs without rebuilding the conditions and to update environments as geography, weather, and operational requirements change.

Nexus Keeps Training Databases Secure and Available to the Right Simulators

Simulation programs depend on large volumes of synthetic environment data, and these databases need to stay current, controlled, and available to the right users and systems. Managing those databases becomes more complex when programs operate across multiple classification levels and leverage multiple simulators in the same training center.

Nexus provides a centralized, multi-level secure database serving environment for storing, governing, and delivering synthetic environment and training databases. Rather than maintaining separate copies in different locations, training center managers, image generators, simulators, and connected systems can access a current, governed database source.

This gives training center managers greater control over who can access and share visual out-the-window and sensor ready databases, while maintaining a record of how those databases are managed and delivered across the program.

Nucleus and Nexus serve distinct but complementary roles: Nucleus generates the visual and sensor environments used in training, while Nexus keeps the database supporting those environments governed, available, and secure across multiple classification levels.

Users can deploy either product independently or use them together, depending on program requirements. Both are built on Aechelon's proven technology as well as COTS hardware, allowing customers to configure and scale the solution around their specific training needs while reducing dependence on specialized hardware and associated supply-chain constraints.

Aechelon Delivers Mission-Ready Flight Simulation

In the end, it is not just about how the pixels look. It is about how effectively the training transfers to the mission. Operators need visual and sensor representations that remain stable, reflect the operational conditions they are preparing to encounter, integrate seamlessly with any simulator host, and deliver precisely on the training program specifications.

What that requires differs from one program to the next. In the U.S. Government's Joint Simulation Environment, Aechelon has provided hundreds of image and data generators for F-35, F-22, and F-18 trainers across multiple sites, along with Nexus to securely store and administer the multispectral terrain data supporting those environments. The program also uses compact mixed-reality systems to increase the number of training participants while reducing physical footprint requirements.

For U.S. Navy pilot training, Aechelon has developed 24 mixed-reality full-cockpit systems for the TH-73 and is integrating 21 for the T-45C. The TH-73 systems incorporate turbulence, brownout, and airflow visualization, while the T-45C systems support full-proficiency and carrier-landing training.

Across these programs, Aechelon configures proven visual, sensor, and database capabilities around each aircraft, training requirement, and system architecture. The result is a training environment built to represent the mission accurately, perform reliably, and integrate into the systems operators train with every day.
