Congressman Cohen Denounces Heartless Trump-Miller Immigration Policies at Judiciary Committee Markup

WASHINGTON - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today denounced the immigration policies of the Trump administration including a proposal to deny legal representation to children facing deportation.

He said President Trump should resign.

In his remarks at the markup, he said in part:

"It's hard to imagine we're sitting here and having discussions about giving children legal representation when they're subject to deportation. An (immigration) hearing is supposed to be confrontational, between two sides, adversarial, and a child without representation against an attorney is not a fair process. They do have a right to a hearing; we all understand that, but there needs to be fairness and the fact we're discussing this is hard to fathom…

"This is coming from Donald Trump. This is what he wants. He wants to deport as many people as possible. That's the message he gave to the Department of Homeland Security. Stephen Miller gave them head counts and they have to meet their head counts…and they do it sometimes illegally. Sometimes they kill people. They make mistakes and they don't understand what they're doing. The President of the United States needs to resign. He's doing so many unimaginable things to this country, and to justice and to due process…We don't have it here anymore…

"It's all about him…a narcissistic grifter. That's who's guarding this country…He doesn't want anyone to have counsel except himself…Roy Cohn told him 'never admit you're wrong. Never back down…' "
