Bellway volunteers help improve outdoor space at RSPCA Woodside animal charity in Leicester

Staff from a local housebuilder took part in a volunteer session at RSPCA Woodside in Leicester and raised £2,500 to help fund the work of the charity.

A group of employees at Bellway East Midlands, which has its headquarters at the Meridian Business Park in Leicester, helped out with general maintenance tasks at the charity's animal rescue and rehoming centre in Scudamore Road in the city.

During a morning's volunteering session at the charity, the Bellway team carried out a number of jobs, including clearing vegetation and sanding and painting fences in the wooded area which is used to exercise the rescue dogs.

The Bellway staff also donated £2,500 to the charity, which represented half of the proceeds from an auction of showhome appliances which were being replaced. The other half of the money was donated to Bellway's national charity partner Cancer Research UK.

The Bellway East Midlands volunteers included business analyst Imogen Deas, PA to the managing director Ayesha Broome, architectural manager Chris Weston, architectural technician Harvey Barnes and adoptions engineer Ryan McGreevy.

Bellway will be donating an additional £250 to help fund RSPCA Woodside's upcoming Christmas Market and Light Walk. Taking place at the centre on Friday 5 December and Saturday 6 December, the event will include a festive light trail, market and Santa Grotto.

Imogen said: "A lot of us are animal lovers here at Bellway East Midlands and we feel a special affinity with RSPCA Woodside because it is our local animal charity organisation and we are aware of the wonderful work they do in taking in and caring for unwanted pets or animals that have been mistreated or hurt.

"It was great to be able to go along to the centre in Scudamore Road to meet the team there and to see exactly what they do. It was also lovely to meet some of the gorgeous animals that they are currently looking after and trying to find homes for.

"As a responsible company, Bellway seeks to make a positive impact in the local community and this was a fun way of reaching out, connecting with and helping a charity that does amazing work. We look forward to continuing to support the organisation."

Gavin Daniels, Head of Income Generation at RSPCA Woodside, said: "It was a pleasure to host the team from Bellway and to show them how we care for the animals while we try to find them a forever home. The volunteers were all very enthusiastic and friendly and we would love to have them back here again.

"The fence painting and sanding they carried out has made the place look so much smarter and has really freshened up the look of our outside area. More importantly, their work clearing parts of the site has not only made the area safer for the animals to enjoy but will also enable our staff to move around and reach the animals in need of their care more quickly."

RSPCA Woodside is a self-funded and independent branch of the RSPCA. It takes in and cares for stray or unwanted pets, and also provides care for injured wildlife, and rehabilitates animals rescued from cruelty.
