Moore Regional Offering Minimally Invasive Treatment for Severe Emphysema

PINEHURST, N.C. - FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst is now using the Spiration Valve System (SVS), a minimally invasive treatment option for lung volume reduction in the treatment of severe emphysema.

What is the Spiration Valve System?

A progressive form of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Emphysema is characterized by a loss of elasticity and enlargement of the air sacs of the lung, causing significant challenges with breathing.

COPD affects about 16 million adults in the United States, and many people are living with undiagnosed COPD, according to Bradley Icard, D.O., pulmonologist with Pinehurst Medical Clinic and Medical Director of FirstHealth's Lung Screening Program.

Icard said minimally invasive treatment of emphysema and COPD is a game-changer for patients.

"Performing bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) with endobronchial valves such as the Spiration Valve System can improve lung function and quality of life for our patients," Icard said.

Benefits of Lung Volume Reduction with SVS

"In short, the SVS includes an umbrella-shaped device that we place in targeted airways of the lung during the procedure. The SVS redirects air from diseased parts of the lung to healthier parts, allowing the healthier tissue to expand and function more effectively."

Study results looking at the effectiveness of treatment with the Spiration™ Valve System show that patients experienced a significant improvement in lung function, respiratory symptoms and quality-of-life scores at 24 months after treatment, Icard said.
