Fairfield to Host Free Compost Giveaway and Paper Shredding Event

The City of Fairfield, in partnership with Republic Services, will host a free compost giveaway event for Fairfield residents on Saturday, June 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., or until supplies run out. The event will take place at the Dunnell Nature Park and Education Center, located at 3351 Hillridge Drive in Fairfield. Master Gardeners from UCCE Solano will be on site to offer composting guidance and other horticultural tips.

The compost will be delivered in bulk. Residents must bring their own containers for collection, and trailers will not be permitted. This is a self-serve event, but shovels will be provided. Proof of Fairfield residency is required to participate.

The compost is sourced from local facilities and is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for use in organic production. It is approved as an Organic Input Fertilizing Material by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and certified through the U.S. Composting Council's Seal of Testing Assurance program. The material is produced from recycled green waste, food scraps, and woody material collected from residential organic carts.

In addition to the compost giveaway, the City will also be partnering with the United Cerebral Palsy of the North Bay (UCPNB) to provide free paper shredding services at this event. UCPNB will also host a donation drive to support its thrift store operations and will be accepting items such as clothing, housewares, and small household appliances in good condition.

Compost giveaway events support the City's sustainability efforts and help meet the requirements of Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383). Signed into law in 2022, SB 1383 establishes statewide organic recycling requirements to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants and greenhouse gases. The law requires residents and businesses to separate organic waste-such as food and yard waste-from garbage so it can be diverted from landfills.
