Bowdoin Employee Melendy Honored for Environmental Stewardship Work

Earlier this summer, Melendy traveled to Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, for a meeting of the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment, where three individuals and one town received "gulfwide awards" for their contributions to the health of the Gulf of Maine.

Melendy picked up the Longard Volunteer Award his "for outstanding volunteer efforts to protect and conserve natural resources within the Gulf of Maine."

The council paid tribute to Melendy in its announcement, stating that he "exemplifies the rare combination of professional excellence, civic leadership, and hands-on environmental stewardship that strengthens communities and protects working waterfronts.

"Through his work at Bowdoin College and extensive volunteer service across midcoast Maine," the council added, "Marko has demonstrated a sustained commitment to marine resource protection, environmental advocacy, and public service. At Bowdoin College, Marko supports responsible scientific research and field-based learning on key coastal and marine issues."

Melendy's commitment to the community involves serving as chair of the Brunswick Rivers and Coastal Waters Commission, where he deals with issues such as aquaculture, harbor management, coastal access, and marine resource use. He also serves on the Brunswick Conservation Commission, the Brunswick Shellfish Committee, and the Mare Brook Watershed Steering Committee, helping advance sustainable shellfish management, habitat protection, and watershed-scale environmental stewardship.

The council went on to pay tribute to Melendy's "deep local knowledge, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment to protecting the environment," noting how his efforts have inspired others. "Through his dedication and service, he has made a lasting contribution toward sustaining the natural resources and communities that define the Gulf of Maine watershed."

"The Gulf of Maine Council has long been a respected source of important information and scientific research for Gulf of Maine communities," commented Melendy. "I've followed them since I was a student and still have some of their articles from the '80s and '90s in a box. So, it was a real honor that they felt my own work was deserving of such recognition."

The Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment was established in 1989 by the region's premiers and governors to maintain and enhance environmental quality and promote sustainability in the Gulf of Maine. Today, the council provides a valuable regional forum bringing together stakeholders from the three US states and two Canadian provinces that border the gulf.
