The City of Gaithersburg officially kicked off construction of its newest municipal facility at 12 S. Summit Ave. on October 23, 2026. Mayor Jud Ashman welcomed attendees and expressed enthusiasm for the project, which represents a major step forward in the City's ongoing efforts to modernize and unify municipal operations.
Mayor Ashman was joined by members of the City Council, City staff, and project partners including representatives with O'Connell & Lawrence, Inc., Manns Woodward Studios, and Plano Coudon.
"Today we celebrate a shared accomplishment and the beginning of an exciting transformation for our City organization," Mayor Ashman said. "This project isn't just about renovating a building. It's about investing in our workforce, improving how we deliver services, and strengthening our connection to the residents of Gaithersburg."
Mayor Ashman expressed deep appreciation to the City's State Delegation for securing more than $1 million in state funding for the project. "This contribution reflects their shared commitment to strengthening municipal infrastructure and helping Gaithersburg build for the future," said Mayor Ashman.
The new facility at 12 S. Summit Ave. will join the police station and Council Chambers at 16 S. Summit Ave. to complete a modern, unified municipal campus bringing together key City services in one location to better serve Gaithersburg residents. With both buildings combined, the City will have invested more than $50 million in Olde Towne, demonstrating a continued commitment to the revitalization of this important community.
Mayor Ashman noted the history of Gaithersburg's current City Hall, originally the home of Edward P. Schwartz, who, in 1913, created a world-famous peony garden that drew visitors from around the country, including President Woodrow Wilson. The City purchased the estate in 1958 and converted the home into municipal offices. While the building has served the City well for more than 60 years, Gaithersburg's growth has created the need for a modern, collaborative workplace that strengthens teamwork and brings operational efficiencies that ultimately improve the quality of public service.
The new 65,000-square-foot municipal building will house 158 employees across seven departments, consolidating operations currently spread across four buildings. Features include new offices, collaborative workspaces, upgraded accessibility features, modern security systems, enhanced technology, and a beautiful outdoor plaza with seating and public art. Sustainability elements such as energy-efficient systems, improved ventilation, and green building practices are integrated throughout the design.
Construction is expected to take 14 months, with substantial completion and occupancy anticipated by the end of 2027.
