Cross shares presentation on credit transfer

November 7, 2025

Dakota State University Registrar Laura Cross gave a presentation on credit transfer at the Upper Midwest Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (UMACRAO) annual conference in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, Oct. 28.

Dakota State is a member of UMACRAO, a non-profit association focused on admissions, enrollment management, and registration issues at higher education institutions. The organization has 79 member institutions from Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and northwestern Ontario.

Cross's presentation, titled "Paving the Pathway for Credit Transfer," highlighted Dakota State's use of Transferology and TES, the Transfer Evaluation System, in transfer processing.

This effort was funded in part by a Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) transfer technology grant, which helped cover the cost of training and part of the cost of Transferology.

DSU was one of 10 institutions selected by WICHE for grant-funded partnerships to improve transfer experience for college students. DSU partnered with Lake Area Technical College to expand the use of course equivalency software to support transfers in high-demand workforce areas for students who earned technical degrees.

In her presentation, Cross shared DSU's use of the TES and Transferology systems to assess transfer credits and how those tools can bring efficiencies to the process. Transferology is a nationwide network that helps students explore their college transfer options for free. The companion site, Transferology Lab, is for employees of subscriber colleges and universities. TES is an interactive resource for course data from higher education institutions.

In addition to students transferring from other higher education institutions, today, many high school students enter college with completed college-level credits, increasing the frequency of evaluating credits. Cross shared examples of how an incoming student out of high school may have credit completed from up to six different colleges or universities, or CLEP and AP exam credit along with college coursework.

The annual event's theme this year was Bridging Connections. In addition to presentations, the event hosted vendors, a keynote speaker, roundtable sessions, and an evening social for networking. Along with presenting, Cross also served as program committee co-chair for the event.
